Habitat for Humanity a win-win organization
Helping Habitat for Humanity can also allow you to help your self. Their primary mission of building and renovating homes through the world gives you a wonderful way to volunteer your time to help others and also get hands on experience at home building and remodeling.
You will be working along side skilled people that can train you in all phases of construction.
If you have never done any drywall work or fixed holes in drywall, you could volunteer to hang drywall. This will give you the general skills necessary to make repairs in your rental units if you tenants "accidentally" knock a hole in the wall. If you volunteer on a remodeling job you will probably even get experience fixing holes in drywall.
Need to learn something about plumbing? Volunteer to help install toilets, sinks, faucets, tubs, showers, and water heaters. Seeing how all of these items are installed will give you great insight into how to take them apart for repairs or replacement in your own rental units.
Trim work, painting, installing carpet, framing walls, etc. are just a few of the other skills you can learn while helping out Habitat for Humanity.
Helping out on a Habitat remodeling job will teach you many of the same skills you will need to renovate or repair your new or existing rental property.
So you can see that helping Habitat for Humanity will also help you.
